Early Pregnancy ultrasound and care

Gynaecare early pregnancy service offers early pregnancy ultrasound scans from 4 weeks and 5 days (5 days after positive pregnancy test) until 12 weeks of pregnancy.

We utilise the latest 2 and 3 D ultrasound technology for your scan. All scans are performed by an expert consultant gynaecologist with consultation at the same time, providing an efficient service that saves money and time, while avoiding multiple visits to different departments.

Early pregnancy scan milestones include:

• 4 weeks and 5 days – 5 weeks: an early pregnancy gestation sac should be visible in the cavity of the womb. The presence of this intrauterine cavity sac confirms that this is not an ectopic pregnancy.
• 5-6 weeks: The early pregnancy gestation sac should have enlarged and within it can be seen a yolk sac and possibly a foetal pole. Early heart pulsations within foetal pole may be seen nearer to 6 weeks gestation.
• 7-8 weeks gestation: Foetal pole measures approximately 11– 16 mm with obvious heart pulsations. An amniotic sac is seen around the foetal pole closer to 8 weeks gestation
• 10-12 weeks gestation: Foetal limbs and movements visible.

Most women will have their first scan after 7 weeks gestation when a foetal heartbeat can be visualised to confirm a viable pregnancy. However, for those with previous complications such as miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or experiencing bleeding or pain in this pregnancy, an earlier ultrasound scan may be necessary to confirm correct implantation of the pregnancy. They will require further scans later in the pregnancy to confirm viability.

• 30-minute consultation with a consultant gynaecologist
• Ultrasound scan with a consultant gynaecologist

Non-invasive prenatal (NIPT) / Harmony screening Package

• 30-minute consultation with a consultant gynaecologist including full medical history
• 2 * ultrasound scans:
  – 6-8 weeks with a consultant gynaecologist
  – 10 weeks scan with NIPT / Harmony Test
• Urinalysis and blood pressure check during consultation

• Written report
• Access to a consultant gynaecologist to answer any queries

Complete Early Pregnancy Care Package

• 3 * 30-minute consultations with consultant gynaecologist
• 3* ultrasound scans as follows:
  – 4+5 to 6 weeks (placement scan)
  – 7- 8 weeks (viability & dating scan)
  – 10 – 12 weeks scan with NIPT / Harmony Test
• Urinalysis and blood pressure check at each visit
• NIPT Test* checking for trisomy 21,18 or 13 and sex-linked chromosomal abnormalities (this can reveal sex of the baby for those who would like to confirm at this early stage of the pregnancy)
• Advice regarding pregnancy care
• Access to a consultant gynaecologist to answer any queries

If urinalysis shows evidence of possible urine infection, the sample may need to be sent to the laboratory for further testing for infection. This will cost an extra £65.
